Watching out for all our best interests |

It is in all of our best interests for the union to succeed, considering the guild now will be negotiating our benefits and working conditions. Those who wish to remain union free, or at least hope to retain the right to decide for themselves about whether or not to become a guild member, have presented the guild with a petition asking for a provisional clause and/or an open shop. Co-chair Sara Steffens says the matter will be addressed at an upcoming meeting. |

While we will continue to pay close attention to any and all negotiations, we feel it is best not to intervene in anything that the guild does. When we have concerns, we will address those directly with the guild and present the answers here, when they affect the employees overall. (Individual concerns will be addressed and answered to the affected individuals only.) In light of our current situation, we feel it is best to allow the guild to try to help and represent the employees on the list of potential layoffs. Therefore, we will refrain from commenting on current negotiations. That doesn’t mean that we won’t continue to present any information that we feel is not being put into the hands of employees. We also will continue to ask questions on your behalf if you are not comfortable asking them yourselves. Our role is strictly to provide full disclosure — hopefully, that will happen on its own. Finally, for anyone who has not heard: the next guild meeting is Wed., July 9 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the CWA Hall, Oakland (1831 Park Blvd.) Officers will be elected. Only members can vote. However, you do not have to be a member to fill out a guild survey. The survey, in part, asks employees what benefits and working conditions are most important to them, giving the union representatives a framework for negotiations. You can obtain a survey directly from union representatives. If you aren’t comfortable asking one of them, we also have copies and would be happy to provide you with one, which you can return anonymously. Just e-mail us. As always, if you have any questions you would like answered, please let me know and we’ll do our best to find out. Thanks, Ann Tatko-Peterson, travel editor George Avalos, business reporter |
